A must read for all those adopting dogs -
The market is flooded with various "how to" books regarding dog training and techniques for efficient and practical success. Save your money. Paul Owens book offers many of the same tried and true techniques with one extreme difference: perspective. This book teaches the master consistent, non-violent yet dominate techniques that succeed beyond the standard practices generally taught in class rooms, books and the numerous television shows that focus on training "troubled" dogs. Here, Mr. Owens turns the mirror on the master to teach a consistent, reliable and comfortable lifestyle approach to teaching the dog and master a symbiotic lifestyle.
The book focuses more on the owners approach and maintaining a calm, direct connection with the animal. My wife and I discovered this book the day before adopting an 11 week old Irish Setter and by following the same protocols detailed, our 3 year old is constantly the pride of each dog park, hotel, and random encounter. The book is easy to follow and you might even find yourself rereading the first 80 pages during difficult personal times, not just issues with your puppy. Remember, training a dog is a long process, one that requires discipline from all the humans involved in and out of the household. If you and your partner, children and neighbors can choose this consistent measure, I promise you'll be amazed at the results.
I've recommended this book for several years and still receive emails thanking us for the recommendation. Don't waste money on solving issues with your dog, just learn to communicate early on. Dogs can change you, and you them, but with a touch of guidance the whole experience can be wonderful and positive.

Great holistic dog training book -
This book came to me as a recommendation from a dog trainer who led my dog's 'good manners' class. I was looking for other follow up resources and this was cited along with works by Karen Pryor. Having really enjoyed her work I wanted to give this book a try.

The Dog Whisperer: A Compassionate, Nonviolent Approach to Dog Training is a holistic book on dog training. The first part of the book describes how dogs think and how other aspects of a dog's life (nutrition, stimulation, etc.) affect his or her ability to be trained. The second half of the book is more hands on training exercises that take you from the most basic form of a command like sit or off all the way to a more advanced version. He also provides great tips on how to make sure that the session is challenging enough while still setting your dog up for success.

Overall I think this is a fantastic book. I found it very complementary with the nonviolent training class I took through a local animal rescue league, but it also provided new knowledge or ways of looking for things. I can see why some might find the beginning of the book new age-y, but as someone who has practiced yoga and sought to live a holistically balanced life I could relate to it and found that it highlighted some of the successes I've had with my dog. Overall I think this book is very helpful whether you've ever taken a training class or not.

The only piece I wish there was more of is how our actions and behaviors affect the response we get from our dogs. I started to read about this in The Other End of the Leash: Why We Do What We Do Around Dogs and found it immensely helpful in making sure that my body language and actions were reinforcing what I wanted from my dog. I've realized through training classes that how I act is a big part of what I get from my dog so I am continuing to work on this.

Overall it's a good book and will help you train your dog to be the companion you seek. Non-violent methods do not have to mean that your dog is running the show or that you're treating them like a human. From the perspective of this book it just means using other methods than violence to train them and learning about how they respond differently to things so we can shape our training methods accordingly.

Highly recommended.

horrible title for a thoughtful, helpful book ! -
Too bad this thoughtful book shares the same title as two other absolutely dreadful books ! This book is written by someone who clearly wants you to care deeply about your dog's well-being, and tries to give you the tools to build a healthy, well-adjusted dog, discussing in different chapters the essentials to ensure your dog is a happy one.

The author is definitely just what the book's title promises-- compassionate-- and tries to help first-time dog owners in particular to find a compassionate way of dealing with their pets, respecting them as creatures worthy of our respect and care-- an attitude that may seem obvious to some, but to many authors obsessed with 'getting dominance' and 'showing who is the boss' such as Cesar Milan, these ideas probably would seem silly.

I instead agree with Mr. Owens' approach, and found that he explains in a clear and simple way how to start down the road of non-violence, and the rewarding relationships this can lead to. Having raised an enormous intact German Shepherd who is calm, trusting, gentle and obedient using non-coercive training methods, I am convinced the approach outlined in this book points folks in the right direction.

Specifically, Mr. Owens gives realistic information on expectations, training strategies, and how dogs learn and think. The book does NOT go into great depth-- but instead gives a quick introduction to positive training methods and mental- and physical health-promoting behaviour, and also provides examples of useful exercises, starting with the usual 'sit', 'stay' etc..

This is a book for people thinking of buying their first dog and trying to understand how to get the most out of the relationship -- definitely NOT not a book for someone who already understands positive reinforcement or is looking for in-depth information on how dogs learn..... it is not a 'scientific' text, it provides basic guidelines -- but helpful ones.

ALthough the explanations are simple, they are probably just about detailed enough for the average beginning dog owner/trainer -- enough to convince you that positive reinforcement is worth trying, and after reading this book you may decide to buy others with more detailed information-- such as those by my favourites Suzanne Clothier (Bones WOuld Rain from the SKy), Patricia McConnell, Turid Rugaas, Pat Miller (Positive Perspectives 2).

While this is not a book I have gone back to and read time and time again, I'm glad I bought it-- and read it-- as it is thought-provoking and a starting point on the journey I started in trying to pinpoint what 'wellness' means for canines...
