Good Canine Training Advice in a Pamphlet -
The prospective buyer should be aware that this is a pamphlet, a very good pamphlet, but it is not a book. Amazon provides the page length (16 pp.), but that's probably not information the customer will seek out. The price is certainly high, in my opinion, for a pamphlet, but nonetheless I think it's worthwhile. So, let the buyer beware.
That having been said, this little guide to teaching a dog certain limits in house behavior is written in a lively and usually clear style. The author, Patricia B. McConnell, is an applied animal behaviorist whose expertise in canine behavior informs her useful techniques. Her methods usually employ physical gestures and other body movement and keep verbal cues simple and to a minimum.
My family was required to read this book--er, pamphlet--as part of a retired racing Greyhound adoption process, but the instruction seems applicable to any breed. Greyhounds come to their adoptive homes with little or no previous exposure to living in a house with people, so I can see how important it would be to use these humane, direct techniques for setting limits for the dog. There's a bit of the "tough love" approach behind some of these ideas, but without any meanness or aggressiveness. I don't have the first-hand experience of applying her techniques, but her approach seems entirely reasonable and sound.
Although the reader will quickly make his or her way through the text with interest, the pamphlet's real value will come in being kept around as a training reference. You may, like me though, have that Shangri-Las song running through your head.

Leader of the pack -
Having 4 dogs myself I know how easy it can be to give your dog what he wants because it's easier. But as a certified dog trainer myself I agree with Patricia that dogs should not walk all over us. They can get what they want by being "good" dogs which means patience and boundaries.
This booklet can be read very quickly and applied immediately to your training routine with your dog. This is a fun booklet with things to do for both you and your dog.
great for beginners -
This is a good pamphlet to hand out to new dog owners or young adults. It is simple and straight forward but doesn't go into much detail. If its detail that you want try one of the authors books, The Other End Of The Leash was a great book.

Great book -
I really liked this book and will be recommending it to my pet owner friends. It makes the good points that I've read and held on to from the last 10-15 behavior books that I've read and classes that I've been to. Although I'm glad I've been able to read all the books, I will be having my boyfriend read this book and will be satisfied knowing that he knows what he needs to!
